City Carton, Athi- River.
This neighborhood is known as an informal settlement, often labeled as a slum. Its name "City -Carton" evokes makeshift accommodations akin to cardboard boxes. When G.A.P. arrived in May 2024, we found the community reeling from recent floods. The majority of its inhabitants, who either cultivated land along the Athi River or, for many women, sought informal employment as laundresses or house cleaners, were particularly hard-hit. At night, relentless downpours would find their way through leaking roofs, forcing families to huddle together, attempting to sleep upright. Mattresses became waterlogged, denying everyone a restful night. With work scarce, food became a luxury, perpetuating a vicious cycle of struggling to meet the most basic of needs.
Building Resilience: Stories of Hope and Recovery
In the heart of City Carton, Jam City, and Kwa Mang’eli, we’ve witnessed incredible resilience over the past five months. After the devastating floods, recovery has been a process, but these communities are rising stronger every day.
Families have rebuilt homes and revitalized businesses like food stalls, tailoring shops, and kiosks. Empowered individuals are finding solutions to their challenges, demonstrating the power of community-led recovery.
Our partnership with the local church has grown into a thriving weekly program for over 90 children, where they learn financial literacy, leadership, problem-solving, and career guidance—building skills to shape their futures.
This is the comeback story of a community that refuses to give up. Together, we are transforming recovery into a foundation for lasting strength and hope. Join us in empowering more lives.
"G.A.P. was a blessing from above. The devastation left many of us in our community in disbelief and dire need. Essentials such as food, mattresses, and rent were just out of reach, but most importantly, we were searching for hope. Thankfully, we found all of that and more through G.A.P."
"As the Lead Pastor at A.I.C Macedonia, it felt like a divine intervention when we received help exactly when we needed it most. Our church was overflowing with families in need of shelter, and while we were grateful for the food donations we received, the support from G.A.P was unparalleled. "
